To limit the potential spread of COVID-19 and in accordance with the government regulations. We have taken the decision to postpone Celebrate Gisborne and cancel all other upcoming events throughout the winter months.
Celebrate Gisborne – the Grand Finale is the latest victim of COVID19 with the very tough decision being made by organisers to hold off on running Friday’s event.
The sell-out event at Te Poho-o-Rawiri Marae was to be the last big push to get Hospice Tairāwhiti over the line of the $3.1million needed to start the new building project. Hospice Tairāwhiti general manager Barbara Grout says the finer details are yet to be worked through about when the event may be held. “We appreciate all the ongoing support from the community,” she says. “We are hugely disappointed not to be able to hold it but we feel although we are well inside the Government’s suggested 500-person threshold, we have a social responsibility to hold back. The health of our community is the most important thing.”
Celebrate organiser Bridgette Penny reiterated Barbara’s thoughts. “I am incredibly disappointed the event is not going ahead, we really were on the home straight. The support we continue to receive from everyone was outstanding and a real community effort with people making pavs, diving for paua, collecting crayfish and putting up their hands to help in the kitchen on the night. Of course the sponsors have just been incredible too – from wineries, to artists, Sunshine Brewery, Ngāti Porou, Larry and Christine Schaub and so many others.”
Ticket-holders have already been in touch with Hospice to say they are still planning to get together with their table and have a dinner party to toast Hospice, with some holding their own small fundraising effort.
Cards made from the beautiful one-off Runa and Holly image are being sold through Hospice, and the $1200 mystery weekend for two raffle will also continue. Both can be purchased through Hospice Tairāwhiti.
Further decisions around the future of Celebrate – the Grand Finale will be made as soon as possible. Ticket-holders are welcome to contact Hospice Tairāwhiti if they have any queries.
